The Problem
A legacy monolithic payment processing system was causing a 23% user drop-off during peak transaction volumes. Customers experienced 8–12 second response delays during end-of-month settlement windows, directly costing the client over $2M in annual lost revenue.
The root cause: a synchronous, tightly-coupled architecture where every transaction triggered a blocking chain of database writes, third-party API calls, and email notifications — all in a single request lifecycle.
The Solution
We designed and executed a full architectural migration to a serverless, event-driven microservices pattern:
- Event Bus (AWS EventBridge) decoupled all downstream side effects from the core transaction flow
- Lambda Functions replaced monolithic service classes — independently scalable, zero idle cost
- SQS-backed async queues for non-critical operations (notifications, analytics, reporting)
- Read replicas + Redis caching eliminated N+1 query patterns from the legacy ORM layer
- Blue/green deployment pipeline with automated rollback ensured zero-downtime migration
The Result
The new architecture went live in 6 weeks using a strangler fig pattern — no big-bang rewrite, no downtime.
- 300% faster average response times across all global regions
- +43% increase in qualified leads (users completing the signup flow)
- 99.9% uptime SLA consistently maintained through peak traffic events
- $1.2M ARR growth attributed directly to the improved onboarding conversion rate
